Stone frog

A stone frog. On the back is a carved relief figure of a falcon, together with a serekh design enclosing the Horus name of an unidentified First Dynasty king. The king may be either Djet or Den, fifth ruler of the dynasty. Frog amulets helped ensure rebirth for the deceased. Country of Origin: Egypt. Culture: Ancient Egyptian. In a Middle Kingdom tale one is lost as the king watches the girls of the palace row on the garden pool. The chief priest rolls back the waters to recover it from the lake bed.
