Serapeum

Underground gallery with and empty Apis bull sarcophagus from the Serapeum. The Serapeum is a system of underground galleries hewn out of solid rock with large side chambers where the mummified remains of the sacred bulls of Apis were held in sarcophagi. The whole complex was dedicated to the god Osiris-Apis (Osirapis). Country of Origin: Egypt. Culture: Ancient Egyptian. Date/Period: dating from the 18th Dynasty, 1550 - 1295 BC to Ptolemaic times 332 - 30 BC. Place of Origin: Memphis, Saqqara. Credit Line: Werner Forman Archive/ N.J. Saunders.

Bronze figure of an ichneumon, mongoose, surmounted by a uraus crown. In myth the sun god Ra took the form of an ichneumon to defeat Apophis, the great serpent of the underworld. The animal was sacred to the goddess Wadjet, and became a symbol of the spirits of the underworld. Country of Origin: Egypt. Culture: Ancient Egyptian. Period: Late Period, 6th - 4th C BC. The royal couple, accompanied by the goddess Hathor, are under a richly decorated marquee, surmounted of a frieze of uraei The structure is supported by delicately slim lotusform and papyriform columns. It should be noted that the queen stands behind the seated king and Hathor.

Illustration d'un Livre des Morts

ATOUM est le père et le roi de tous les dieux, le créateur de l'Univers qui, par sa volonté, s'est extrait du chaos initial. Puis, en crachant, en soufflant, ou en se masturbant, il a donné naissance au premier couple divin CHOU et TEFNOUT. Il est le plus souvent figuré comme un roi vêtu d'un pagne, et plus rarement sous l'aspect d'un serpent, coiffé de la double couronne de Haute et Basse-Egypte. Aîné des dieux, il est aussi le soleil déclinant au crépuscule. Il est représenté alors comme un homme à tête de bélier.
