En el antiguo Egipto el amamantamiento duraba los tres primeros años de la vida, cuando el niño vivía inmerso en la unidad familiar amparado por la madre o la nodriza. La leche de mujer consolidó unos vínculos afectivos con carácter tan perdurable, que quedó plasmada en la tradición literaria y funeraria. El cargo de nodriza regia ayudó a encumbrar el rango social de la mujer, siendo un motivo de orgullo, y excusa para acercarse a la figura del hijo del monarca y quién sabe si algún día futuro rey. En tanto que el tutor, como equivalente masculino de aquélla, funcionario de prestigio ya entrado en la madurez, aun gozando de idéntico afecto, actuó menos como criador que como maestro y consejero experimentado.
Las escenas religiosas de amamantamiento del monarca, confirmaban el origen divino y la garantía de una vida ultraterrena. Describen la importancia en el ceremonial y en los ritos de la coronación. La Leche materna tuvo también una consideración biológica muy destacada en la formación y crecimiento fetal, en las pruebas de viabilidad del niño y en la fertilidad femenina. Las fuentes papirológicas médicas nos dicen cómo la leche humana, entre otras, figuró como ingrediente en recetas farmacológicas; y aportan multitud de consejos que nos recuerdan a los modernos textos de puericultura y pediatría. La herencia iconográfica de las “Isis Lactans" fue el modelo para la representación de la Virgen María y su Divino Hijo en los albores del cristianismo y en el arte medieval.


Manuel Juaneda-Magdalena Gabelas es médico especialista en Cirugía General y Aparato Digestivo, doctor en Medicina y Cirugía por la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Máster Internacional en Mastología y Patología Mamaria (Universidad Menéndez Pelayo); máster universitario en Patología Mamaria-Senología (Universitat de Barcelona) y en Antropología Física y Genética Forense (Universidad de Granada). Ejerce como cirujano en la “Unidad de patología mamaria” del Hospital Abente y Lago (Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de La Coruña-CHUAC). Es miembro de la “Egypt Exploration Society”, la Asociación Española de Egiptología y la Societat Catalana d´Egiptologia; en estas últimas, ha sido invitado como conferenciante en diversos cursos auspiciados por ambas entidades. Fue panelista en el III Congreso Iberoamericano de Egiptología (Universidad de la Laguna, 2006). At the end of the 6th dynasty the 500 year old established order of the Old Kingdom fell apart, which, according to the interpretation given to various contemporary literary sources, started a period of social unrest and economic decline.

The magnitude of the economic investment bestowed by the members of the higher social strata on the monuments that would be the abode for their after-life leads to the hypothesis that an economic decline could also manifest itself in the dimensions of the various architectonic elements of these monuments.

The dimensions of the tombs have been chosen as the subject of this study. The preliminary part of the study is performed on the tombs in the necropolis of Giza. The results of the study are compared with the same measurements in the necropoleis of Saqqara and Abusir. The conclusion is that the economic decline started already at the early dynastic period and not as a result of the caving in of the Old Kingdom.

An interesting ‘side-effect’ of the study is that the dimensions of the tombs can serve as a method to check a dating that has been proposed based on other aspect of the tomb.
