Limestone ostracon depicting a burial

Limestone ostracon depicting a burial (Acc. 5886) Limestone flakes, called ostraca, provided a cheap, smooth surface for writing. Many thousands of ostraca survive carrying written inscriptions and rough sketches. However, this ostracon is unique because it bears a sketch of a funeral. This piece measures 16cm and depicts the process of taking the mummified body down the tomb shaft prepared for burial. At the top of the shaft are shown five figures, four mourning women, corroborated by other tomb scenes, are shown pulling their hair in distress and bereavement, and a male figure, acting as priest, who carries in one hand an incense burner, and with the other he pours a libation. An individual is shown scaling his way down the shaft, and in the burial chambers themselves, there is a priest who appears to be wearing the mask of Annubis wo is known to have officiated at funerals. Inside the tomb there are other coffins already in place, implying that this is perhaps a family tomb. Though ostraca are most typical from the New Kingdom, c. 1200 BC, the design of this tomb is well known later in the third intermediate period, so it is not inconceivable that this piece was made after the New Kingdom. This ostracon was discovered in Thebes, Upper Egypt, and was donated to the Manchester Museum by Sir Alan H. Gardiner in 1913.

Black Granite Block (Acc. 4948) Relief block of black granite, incised with the names of king Ramesses II and one of his sons, Prince Khaemwas (compare object 4947). 3.7 x 12.0 x 7.8 cm 19th Dynasty Memphis (Mit Rahina), Lower Egypt Acquisition: British School of Archaeology in Egypt (Donation) Khaemwaset undertook server all building projects for his father, and restored several older monuments, including the pyramids at Giza and Saqqara. He is sometimes refered to as 'The First Egyptologist' Bibliography W M Flinders Petrie, "Memphis I." (BSAE, London 1909) (Excavation 1908) PL. XIX Pg. 8 "The Monuments XIX Dynasty. Over the region now occupied by the pond near the West Hall, there has been a building of Ramessu II, now entirely destroyed. Only the west side of its foundation is left, and in the sand bed of it a foundation deposit was found, shewn on Pl. XIX. The large block of alabaster has the cartouches of Ramessu II on both of the faces, and the inscription of "the high priest of Ptah, the royal son, Kha-em-uas" on both of the edges. The lesser tablet of green glazed pottery has similar names on the faces and edges; and the black granite tablet has the names of Ramessu on one face, and that of Khaemuas on the other face. These are some of the finest deposit blocks that are known; they rest now at Manchester."

This is the 'atef' crown usually worn by Osiris, with ram's horns, a tall central element, and feathers on the sides.
