Shabti of Nakht-Djehuty

Shabti of Nakht-Djehuty
The elaborately executed shabti wears a wig with two horizontal bands at the bottom of the lappets and one on the back of the wig. The arms are crossed right over left, the fists originally held hoes. On the back is a bag; the buttocks are placed a little too high. On the chest and the arms, a large collar consisting of concentric lines is painted. The feet are separated by a band. The facial features are painted in black. The text is painted in horizontal lines running around the body, the beginnings and endings separated on the back by a vertical cross-hatched band.

(4) which is wont to be done in the necropolis, to make arable
(5) a field, to irrigate the riparian lands

Upper part of a coffin lid

Upper part of a coffin lid

9376.jpg
The fragment is the upper part of a lid of an anthropoid coffin, broken off or cut off just below the hands.
The face is relatively small and may be female. The heavy, dotted lappet wig is crowned with four fillets: a checkered band with large rectangles, two checkered bands with small rectangles and one with stylized flower petals. The face is protected on the left by a winged uraeus. Probably there was another uraeus on the right. The collar is relatively small. The lappets of the wig end in four horizontal bands: one with stripes, a multicoloured checkered band, a broad one with udjat-eyes, and one with multicoloured dots. The wig is framed by a dotted band and a 'plaited' pattern at the back. The closed, but empty hands are modelled on the surface; they are half covered by broad bracelets in the same pattern as the collar.

On the lid, shown in delicate low relief, winged erotes drive chariots drawn by animals associated with the four seasons: bears with spring, lions with summer, bulls with fall, and boars with winter. On the front, four erotes bear seasonal garlands composed of flowers, wheat, grapes, pomegranates, and laurel. Between the swags are three episodes from the myth of the Greek hero Theseus. With the help of the Cretan princess Ariadne, Theseus slew the Minotaur, a part-bull and part-human monster who was caged in a labyrinth, where he consumed Athenian boys and girls sent as annual tribute. Depicted from left to right are: Ariadne giving a thread to Theseus at the entrance to the labyrinth, Theseus slaying the Minotaur, and the sleeping Ariadne abandoned on the island of Naxos, where she will be awakened by the god Dionysos to become his immortal bride.
