Cartonnage. Long band, placed on the legs of a mummy, with a column of text containing a prayer to Osiris for daily offerings on behalf of the singer of Ptah Aset-em-kheb daughter of Ta-kha-Kas. On each side of the column of text are depictions of eight mummiform gods. The two upper pairs are the four canopic gods. The style of the representations and the names point to the Ptolemaic Period.

The individual represented here wears a wig with stylized, echeloned curls and a diadem with streamers. That he is a king is indicated by the cobra coiled around the diadem and rearing up at his brow.
Although once catalogued as a work of the fifteenth century B.C., the relief was subsequently realized to be a work of Dynasty XXVI, which also produced very elegant and highly finished sculptures both in the round and in relief.

This fragmentary relief was excavated in the debris over and around a tenlple of the Twenty-sixth Dynasty (664–525 B.C.). However, its precise date, nature, and subject matter are uncertain. The female feline with lotus flower may be related to Hathor or some other goddess, and the falcon heads below her are possibly celestial symbols.

The smooth surface at the top of this foot indicates that it is not a tragment from a sculpture but a complete, intact object, probably a temple offering (ex voto). Perhaps it represents an individual's request to a god for relief from an ailment. Contrary to popular belief, not all temple offerings were images of deities.

The somewhat broad and imprecise carving of this idealizing head may represent a provincial style of the region of Dendera. It may also be a harbinger of the dramatic decline in private statuary that occurred by the late first century B.C. A rosette is symbolic of light and regeneration, and a rosette diadem sometimes symbolizes posthumous deification. However, here the diadem may be the insignia of a provincial governorship or a priesthood.

    The mastaba of Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep

    Niankhkhnum, right, is comfortably installed in a litter (view 73) carried by six servants, in the centre of whom is a dwarf named Khednes. The dwarf is represented unclothed and carries a clothes box on his shoulders. Two men precede the porters, the first is a barber the second a funerary priest. The latter has a dog behind him on a leash. The dog, which belongs to the breed of slughi (or saluki), seems to be a favourite dog of the deceased and is called Hekenen. Behind Niankhkhnum are three men portrayed one above the other. The middle one appears unclothed and has a clothes sack thrown over his shoulder. Because he is the only unclothed person in the retinue, if one discounts the unclothed dwarf, he seems to occupy a relatively low position within the ranks of servants of the deceased. The other two men behind the deceased are funerary priests, the top one also being a manicurist and the other a barber.

    A mummiform shabti from a mould and baked afterwards. The details were applied in colour. The body is yellow, the wig presumably dark blue, the lower ends of the braids yellow. Both the hoes and the basket on the back were painted. On the front there is a column of hieroglyphs.

    Between the two doors of appearance is the common image field contains the representation of the two deceased embracing. Unlike the two previous similar scenes, their heads don't approach each other but are, despite the embrace, clearly separated from each other. They both have their natural hair, both wear broad necklaces and a formal kilt with a decorative belt-buckle. Niankhkhnum stands to the left, Khnumhotep to the right, both facing each other. Niankhkhnum holds the left forearm of Khnumhotep with his left hand, which passes in front of latter; Khnumhotep holds his right arm behind the back of Niankhkhnum and puts his right hand on the right shoulder of his brother.
    Above their heads, in two vertical columns each, their names and titles are again beautifully inscribed in raised relief (view 125): "The manicurist of the king, the supervisor of the manicurists of the palace, the confidant of the king, the one whom his lord loves, ........".
