Examples of the ancient Egyptian paste relief technique from the mastaba of Nefermaat: the construction of a papyrus boat. The technique is claimed to have been invented by Nefermaat himself by carving a sunken relief and filling it with colored inlays. However, as one can see, inlays tended to detach leaving only the sunk silhouettes, and the technique was soon abandoned.
