Excavations at Oxyrhynchus 1: 1903

Workmen carefully extract the papyrus fragments from the dust, collecting them in more baskets. Some days, more than thirty might be filled with papyri, for Grenfell and Hunt to sort overnight so as to release the baskets for the next day’s work.

The mound of Abu Teir when the excavators had dug as close to the sheikh’s tomb as they could (cf. first photograph on first page); the view shows how the sifted soil was not removed but just piled up in a different place. That so much of it is no longer there is due to its later extraction for use as fertilizer

Horus and Geb

A fine relief of the Egyptian gods Horus and Geb from tomb KV14 in the Valley of the Kings. KV14 was the tomb of both pharaoh Twosret of the 19th dynasty and Setnakht, her successor, who founded the 20th dynasty. When Setnakhte came to power, he usurped Twosret's pre-existing tomb for himself and arranged to have all images of Twosret erased. Setnakhte had himself solely represented in KV14. The royal cartouche of Setnakhte can be seen at the right hand side of the photo.

Mummy cartonnage for the stomach

Mummy cartonnage for the stomach
The piece is more or less rectangular. It is framed on all sides with a triple checkered band. There are two registers of representations, separated by a single checkered band. In the upper register, Osiris, Horus and Isis stride to the right. Osiris wears the Atef-crown, a collar and a short kilt, and holds a uas-sceptre. The falcon-headed Horus wears the Double Crown, a collar and a short kilt, and holds a uas-sceptre too. Isis wears a long wig and a close-fitting garment that does not cover the breasts. She is crowned with cow's horns and a sun disk, and carries a papyrus sceptre. To the right is a falcon wearing the double crown, to the left a ba-bird wearing the double crown.
In the lower register, two women bewail a mummy lying on lion-shaped bier. They wear lang wigs and long, close- fitting garments; they raise their arms in mourning. The scene is crowned by a winged sun disk with two uraei.
The Four Sons of Horus are depicted in the four corners, separated from the scenes by a checkered band. The falcon-headed Qebehsenuef is upper right, the human-headed Amset is upper left, the baboon-headed Hapi is lower left, the jackal-headed Duamutef is lower right. They are dressed in white mummy garments and hold cloths.

Glazed stone inlay of a bee hieroglyph

Glazed stone inlay of a bee hieroglyph

Stone inlay depicting the bee, a common hieroglyph in titles of kings and officials. Although the royal title in question is often translated 'king of Lower Egypt', its precise meaning and origin remain obscure. The inlay may have formed part of an item of furniture or burial equipment. In the Ptolemaic Period glass inlays were manufactured for decoration and hieroglyphic inscriptions on coffins, and this glazed stone example may derive from a similar setting.

Presents the latest research in Egyptology on the theme of Ancient Egypt in a Global World
This selection of 23 papers from the 15th annual Current Research in Egyptology symposium addresses the interregional and interdisciplinary theme of ‘Ancient Egypt in a Global World’. This theme works on a number of levels highlighting the current global nature of Egyptological research and it places ancient Egypt in the wider ancient world. The first section presents the results of recent excavations, including in the western Valley of the Kings and analysis of the structures, construction techniques, food production and consumption remains at Tell Timai (Thmuis) in the Delta. Part II focuses on the cross-cultural theme with papers including discussions on the presence in India of terracotta figurines from Roman Egypt; the ancient Egyptian influence of Aegean lion-headed divinities; Libyan influence in New Kingdom and Third Intermediate Period Egyptian administration and the identification of ancient Egyptian finds from the British countryside reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme. The third part of the book includes current research undertaken across the world of Egyptology, including analysis of late Roman crocodile mummies though noninvasive radiographic imaging techniques and the study of infant jar-burials in ancient Egypt and Sudan to identify differences in regional socioeconomic contexts and the interaction between people and local resources.
The editors of this volume are all Ph.D. candidates at University College and King’s College London

Model of a Cow

Model of a Cow
The wooden model of a standing cow is carved from a single piece of wood. A peg at the bottom of each hoof was intended to attach the figure to a rectangular base. The body is painted to imitate the natural skin of the animal.
Individual models of cows are not very common in ancient Egyptian art, so this cow may have been part of a butchery or cattle-counting scene.
The deceased possibly hoped to use it in the hereafter as an offering.
