Nefermaat

Examples of the ancient Egyptian paste relief technique from the mastaba of Nefermaat: the construction of a papyrus boat. The technique is claimed to have been invented by Nefermaat himself by carving a sunken relief and filling it with colored inlays. However, as one can see, inlays tended to detach leaving only the sunk silhouettes, and the technique was soon abandoned. From Meidum, chapel of Itet within the mastaba M16 of Nefermaat, 4th Dynasty (c.2550 BCE), Old Kingdom. Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst, Gl 103a-f.
